What is an SFP Module?
SFP Module is a compact, hot-pluggable network interface module mainly used for both data communications and telecommunication applications. On networking hardware, an SFP interface is a modular slot for a media-specific transceiver to connect a copper cable or fibre-optic cable. By using SFPs, individual ports can be equipped with any suitable type of transceiver as per requirement.
SFP modules are also known as Mini-GBIC because they replaced the larger gigabit interface converter (GBIC) in most applications. SFP transceivers support Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, PON and other communications standards. It interfaces between communication devices like routers, switches and fibre optic cables and performs conversions between optical and electrical signals.

Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP) supports Ethernet, InfiniBand, SONET and Fiber Channels. QSFP is a quad form of SFP Modules and it can hit speeds up to 100 Gbps through four reception and transmission channels, suitable to upgrade systems that require large bandwidth.
